Simon Says - MNTRA & TCHiLT

Published on

The music of MNTRA and TCHiLT is hard to generalize into one genre, type, or style. Both artists have unique styles that have elevated their talents throughout their career thus far, making for a dynamic musical duo.

MNTRA, aka Dillan Patel, was raised in southern California then spent a good amount of his adolescence in India, where he started to draw his initial musical inspiration from. He then pursued an education at UC Berkeley where he found a new found passion for electronic music where he focuses on a mix of house, techno, and funky beats. Hailing from California's Bay Area, TCHiLT aka Teran Faust draws from old school hip-hop, funk, jazz, and world music to create a sound somewhere between breaks and house; not to mention he records many the vocals in his tracks, plays drums, guitar, piano, AND bass.

These two may be early in their career but have proved to be top notch artists across the board. TCHilT & MNTRA’s new single ‘Simon Says’ is a testament to that very statement.

The track released today on Brooklyn based label OKNF’s newest compilation We Are OKNF Volume.13. ‘Simon Says’ has seen early support & downloads from Billy Kenny, Petey Clicks, MKJAY, SODF, Aylen, Hunter Reid, NiQW, Steve Darko, Mochakk, Arnold & Lane, Sammy Legs, From Drop Till Dawn, Morelia, and many more. “I have a good feeling about this one and think there'll be good support on this especially since we had Shiba San regularly rinsing one of the tunes off our last WAO compilation,” says OKNF label manager Clem Lee.

‘Simon Says’ accentuates the distinct talents of MNTRA and TCHiLT oh so well, in a track that you’ll have on repeat. The flow of bass, house, and funky synths make for a stunning psychedelic groove. The witty and amusing vocals, done by TCHiLT & MNTRA, mixed over waves of funky acid house make for a stand out track. The best part about this track is that every inch of it sounds different than the last, while still sounding cohesive and incredibly catchy.

“We decided to say f*ck it and went with the wonky choice on as many decisions as we could with this track, ultimately leading up to a mixed bag of sounds with sprinkles of acid everywhere, creating a vibe that pays tribute to the 303” explains MNTRA.

Teran describes, “With Simon Says we wanted to challenge the expectations of a 303 acid bass and explore more unconventional arrangement decisions. We tried to let go of structural guidelines and just let the song form itself, much like an unpredictable acid trip”.

‘Simon Says’ is a commanding track, paving the way for eccentric tunes to be at the forefront of house music.

Another thing to mention is that they also co-founded their own label Boiz House with other fellow Berkeley grads, which continues to challenge music industry norms by releasing songs as a collective artist as well as individuals representing the label. Boiz House has seen support from Night Bass and Dirtybird on their recent debut single 'In My Body'.

These boys are incredible on their own and unstoppable when they are together. Their passion for what they do is showcased in their live performance, dedication to creating innovative music, and how they treat their fans like family. Keep a close eye on these two as they continue to grow and climb to the top.
